The Rocks Are Sleeping
A true Tidemark bedtime story

A true Tidemark bedtime story

Daddy Bear came back to the Cozy Chair determined to finish bedtime properly. He raised the footrest, tucked the blanket, and wrapped Aurelia into a squirrel burrito. Aurelia sneezed on his glasses. The plan was proceeding.

In the feelings book, yellow meant happy. Green meant calm. Blue meant sad. Aurelia tapped yellow, then Daddy. “That’s you.” Daddy straightened. If he was the Happy One, surely he could solve bedtime.

But when they reached gray, Aurelia went still. Bedtime felt gray. The door closed. The room grew quiet. What if everyone went away and did not come back? Daddy finally understood: the problem was not sleep.

“We are just nearby,” Daddy promised. “We listen. We check. We come when you call.” He paused outside the door to prove it. Aurelia watched the hallway. “Mama,” she said.

Daddy tried evidence. The rocks from Kalamata had crossed a sea and flown beneath the moon, all the way home. The sun went down; the moon came up; morning always returned. “Mama,” said Aurelia.

Daddy tried a case study. These little paws had walked through Greece, boarded an airplane, and carried Aurelia home. She admired them carefully. They were excellent paws. “Mama,” she said again.

By then Daddy had presented feelings, blankets, household response procedures, astronomy, geology, international travel, and one olive. He waited for the findings. Aurelia looked past the entire briefing toward the empty doorway.

At last, Daddy stopped proving. He moved the books and stones aside. “What would help?” he asked. “Mama.” So Daddy did the hardest bedtime thing: he did not insist on finishing. He called Mama, held Aurelia’s paw, and waited.

Mama Fox came smiling, exactly as promised. Aurelia flew into her arms. Daddy set down the stone. Mama gathered the blanket and bunny. “Two books,” she said gently. “And now bed.” The comfort changed. The boundary did not.

Outside, moonlight tucked the traveling rocks into their garden bed. Inside, Mama opened the first book. Daddy kissed Aurelia goodnight and went just nearby. Nobody said another word about coming back. They did not need to. Mama had.
